We always like posting the little guy news. Why? When it comes to air taxi and air charter, we too, were once a "little guy." In fact all large successful operations were small in their genesis. Even the venerable Herb Kelleher and Fred Smith will tell you that with one airplane, a strong vision, a business plan and bare minimum financing they can build their dreams. They created Southwest Airlines and FedEx, now household names. This story is about what busy light twins can do when flown in a high utilization environment. While air taxi futurists are busy burning up government money on various sophisticated models on what the future might look like, today's air charter entreprenneurs are gathering real data on what the public is willing to pay to avoid driving, even if it means getting into aircraft that many who burn jet fuel turn their noses up at. While this story sounds more like an airline (scheduled service between two points) the fact is that these gutsy entreprenneurs are actually doing something that many air taxi futurists only dream of, they are gathering real time data on the public now. What will they pay? What are their needs? Where are the routes? As the east coast of the US falls futher into traffic quagmire around major metropolitan areas, more commuters will look to the skies to avoid the insanity of an overloaded interstate highway system. Certainly the folks at Simmons Air will benefit from this trend and they are likely to be the front line soldiers in the new paradigm known as air taxi, no matter what the spokesperson for NASA tells you. This post was made by Adam Webster who has always been a bit snobby about Jet-A aircraft, yet now that he sees stubborn entreprenneurs like himself prove their models with light piston twins, he is beginning to accept the fact that Navajo's and 402's have their place in the world. |
