This article from AINonline.com indicates that Bob Crandall and Don Burr's iFly air taxi may have created larger waves than they have intended. If you look carefully as to what Mr. Crandall says about air taxi pricing halfway through this article, you'll see an non-typical reference to pricing, at least within the context of current jet pricing. In answering "what will it cost?" Crandall offers: "Something on the order of $3 to $4 per mile, which is half what it costs to fly that way [air taxi] today." A rare use of the words "per mile" when discussing pricing, shows that iFly air taxi is no small project. Air charter industry experts and business aviation analysts have long known that the vagueries of "per hour" pricing, along with changing quoting methodologies, fuel surcharges, taxi charges, etc..have long complicated the pricing and air charter process. This group, however, may not be playing with a full deck, as the utilization required to offer air taxi ubiquity is something that Burr and Crandall have probably not considered. |
