Opa LockaMiami, FL USA (KOPF / OPF)The Opa Locka region interestingly is a part of Miami that has more to do with aviation than any other history as part of its original formation. When the city of Opa Locka was founded in 1927 by Glenn Curtiss of the then famous Curtiss Aircraft Co. it was done at the same time that he developed the Florida Aviation Camp nearby. Before he died in 1930 he transferred the remaining portion of his Florida property to the United States Navy to what would then become NAS Miami a site that hosted famous lighter than air and heavier than air aircraft that used the base as a way point enroute to Panama and other parts of the globe. Amelia Earhart also used this airport as the launching point for her attempt to circumnavigate the world. The US Navy eventually transferred the property to Dade County to form what is now commonly known in the Miami Metro area as the Opa Locka Airport. | ||||
