Dekalb PeachtreeAtlanta, GA USA (KPDK / PDK)The Peachtree airport had an illustrious career as a key location of the US Army Air Corps for a training base in World War I as part of Camp Gordon. In 1940 the US Navy commissioned a portion of the field as part of the US Naval Reserve and made it an aviation base that was soon expanded to encompass more of the airport as the outbreak of World War II demand more acreage. By the end of 1942 it was a full fledged Naval Air Station. Over the years following World War II it became clear that local businesses and pilots wanted access to the field. While a dual use period was the “foot in the door” for Dekalb County, ultimately the county was able to terminate the Navy’s lease and reclaim the airport for private enterprise and general aviation. Around this time the Navy conceded that it needed greater runway lengths for the faster jet aircraft and a move to Marietta, GA made more sense since it could couple its operations with Dobbins Air Force base. | ||||
