The City of Stockton is the seat of San Joaquin County, located in northern central area of California. Well known for its deepwater port at the head of navigation on the San Joaquin River, Stockton was incorporated in 1850. The most eastern deep water port located on the west coast, Stockton is an important shipping and processing center for the fertile San Joaquin Valley. Area business includes the production of numerous food items, and the manufacturing of electronics, lumber products, and construction materials. Also located in Stockton are the University of the Pacific (1851), Humphreys College (1896), the San Joaquin County Delta Collage, a junior college, and a variety of cultural groups, and several military installations. Stockton was founded in the late 1840s and grew as a supply center during the California gold rush. The river port and deepwater channel to San Francisco Bay were completed in 1933.
