First settled in 1820 when a newcomer , John Kelly, built his home at what would be 2nd and Jefferson Streets. Before being named Springfield in 1832, it was known as Calhoun for Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. As a young man, Abraham Lincoln moved here in 1837 and spearheaded the effort to moved the state capital from Vandalia to Springfield. He and eight others in his influential group known as the “Long Nine,” were successful in their effort.
