Salt Lake City, UT USA (KSLC / SLC)

Many have wondered what the origin of the Great Salt Lake is and the question can be answered quite simply with a basic understanding of the modern theories behind Geology and the nature of surficial deposits as they were affected after the last ice age. About 15,000 years ago, a lake from the late Pleistocene era known as Lake Bonneville suddenly discharged. The historical shoreline evidence for this lake can be seen some 900 feet about the present level of The Great Salt Lake. Geologists that began research on the origin of The Great Salt Lake in 1965 surmised that a sudden and massive breach to the north led to a rapid emptying of this lake. Post ice age it was common for ice damns or loose material to give way, leading to more erosion and hence more drainage.

The saltiness of The Great Salt Lake is due to a simple topographic fact: There are no outlets for the water that runs into the lake, and therefore evaporation only affords an exit for water molecules (as humidity) and not heavier solids such as salts and other minerals.
